Title tag

Your title tag is the first and most important factor any designer or programmer should look at to create a site with good SEO and achieve high rankings. It is a piece of HTML code that sits in the <head> section.

Below is an example of a title tag:

<head>

<title>Title Tag | SEO | Search engine optimisation</title>

</head>

The title also appears in the heading of any browser window and informs the viewer of the pages topic.

The title is the first area that most major search engines will read. It is essential to include your keyword or phrase in your title tag. Try not to use any words that have no worth and the tag should contain no more than 70 characters.

An important note to make is that if you use more common keywords you may find it difficult to get a high ranking, due to a high amount of competition. To increase your chance of being found on a search engine try to use a popular but more specific phrase. It is also advisable to give your pages unique titles, not doing so may lower your search engine rankings.

Try to come up with a unique title for each page in your website. By replicating your title tag will not achieve any good. In fact it could damage any pages chances of being indexed by a search engine.

It is acceptable to use the same keywords in your title tag if you use other keywords and in a different order. In fact it is advisable to use unique keywords at the beinging of your title tag, but have the same theme at the end, for example your company name.
